Abstract
To estimate the impact of the North Korean famine happened during the late 1990s, the height analysis of North Korean defectors using observed data from 2002-2012 by national health checkup. This study differentiated from the previous survey based studies in that it controls the duration of stay in South Korea. Results showed the hight of the 1981-90 cohort is 1.9~2,0cm in males and 1.0~1.1cm smaller in females than the reference group which is 1966-1970 cohort who already matured before the North Korean famine. The implication of above result is that accumulated malnutrition affected the height of the cohort negatively who experienced the famine during the late 1990s which was known as The Arduous March. Further studies should be done to analyse the long-term effect of health such as labor productivities.
